American households who have been hoping interest rates would soon decline may have to wait a bit longer. The Federal Reserve is expected to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged on Wednesday. But yet another report of persistent inflation may ultimately cause the policy-making body to keep rates elevated for longer than it had previously expected. For people with money stashed away in higher-yielding savings accounts, a continuation of elevated rates translates into more interest earnings. But for people saddled with high cost credit card debt, or aspiring homeowners who have been sidelined by higher interest rates, a lower-rate environment can’t come soon enough.

With its decision to hold the line on rates, the committee in its post-meeting statement noted a "lack of further progress" in getting inflation back down to its 2% target. The process has resulted in the central bank balance sheet to come down to about $7.4 trillion, or $1.5 trillion less than its peak around mid-2022. Under the new plan, the Fed will reduce the monthly cap on Treasurys to $25 billion from $60 billion. The reduction of the balance sheet roll-off, then, can be seen as a slight easing measure. The Fed uses interest rates to control the flow of money, with the intent that higher rates will dampen demand and thus help reduce prices.

In an effort to navigate a market that remains highly concentrated under Big Tech's dominance, but also ripe for stock pickers, Barclays has dozens of stocks that share similar characteristics to the tech heavyweights. However, some select Big Tech remained fairly strong throughout the sell-off, with stocks like Alphabet and Apple bucking the downtrend. While Big Tech valuations still appear reasonable to Barclays analyst Venu Krishna, he pointed out that they're "not the only game in town," and suggested investors diversify their portfolios to beat their benchmarks. Yet, market returns, earnings upside, and institutional investor exposure remain highly concentrated in Big Tech," Krishna said in a Tuesday note. Aside from allowing investors to diversify, these stocks come with strong fundamentals based on profitability, balance sheet strength, cash conversion, and growth-adjusted valuation characteristics that closely resemble those of Big Tech stocks, the firm said.

The 10-year Treasury yield at one point in April neared 4.75% after starting the year below 4%. The anecdote, coupled with troubling inflation and economic growth data in April, helped push Treasury yields higher. More worrisome Powell commentary Wednesday after the Fed decision could further spike Treasury yields — or perhaps, he will sound confident the Fed still has a handle on inflation and rates will decline in response. However, that climb could run out of steam if Federal Reserve comments on Wednesday force Treasury yields higher. Higher interest rates constrain technology companies' ability to post the type of strong growth the sector has become synonymous with in recent years.

The only reason the Federal Reserve might be tempted to cut rates would be to help the U.S. cover interest payments for the national debt, according to fund manager Freddie Lait. The Fed is widely expected to keep its benchmark overnight borrowing rate in a range between 5.25%-5.5%. Traders are currently only pricing in about a 50% chance of a Fed rate cut taking place as early as September and expect just one quarter-percentage-point reduction by the end of the year, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. The reason they might cut is because the U.S. government can't afford [them not doing] it — and that's a much scarier reason to have to cut," he added. A spokesperson for the Federal Reserve declined to comment.

Gold subdued as traders ready for Fed rate verdict

Gold prices struggled for momentum on Wednesday as investors refrained from taking big positions ahead of a U.S. Federal Reserve policy decision that could offer for more cues on its rate-cut timeline. U.S. gold futures were down 0.2% at $2,298.30 per ounce. The Fed is expected to hold its benchmark interest rate steady at 5.25% to 5.5%. Gold is known as an inflation hedge but elevated interest rates reduce the appeal of holding the non-yielding asset. Among other metals, spot silver rose 0.2% to $26.32 per ounce and platinum inched up 0.2% to $935.10.

High-yield savings accountsThe average interest rate on regular bank savings accounts is roughly 0.5% but can run as low as 0.01% at the biggest banks. By contrast, the average on high-yield savings accounts is well over 4%, according to DepositAccounts.com. If you leave it parked in a regular savings account at 0.5%, you’ll get $50 in interest for a year. As with any savings account, banks can lower the rate they offer — also known as the APY — at any time. Money market accounts and money market fundsAlthough money market deposit accounts and money market mutual funds are both generating yields competitive with the best high-yield savings accounts, there are important differences.

Hong Kong CNN —Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index surged more than 7% in April as the best-performing major index in the world. The valuation of Hong Kong stocks has also become more “compelling” relative to the rest of the Asian region after the pullback last year, said Zhikai Chen, head of Asian equities at BNP Paribas Asset Management. He added that there is a shift in investors’ sentiments as Chinese economic data turned more positive. Innes said global investors are currently “underweight” in Chinese markets, including Hong Kong, because of geopolitical tensions and concerns surrounding potential fallout from the upcoming US elections. Stock exchange data showed that southbound investors (meaning investment from mainland China into Hong Kong) have bought nearly $20 billion of Hong Kong-listed stocks in March and the first three weeks of April on a net basis.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva speaks during a briefing on the Global Policy Agenda at IMF headquarters during the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, DC on April 18, 2024. Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, played down the prospect of any negative impact from a monetary policy divergence between Europe and the U.S., but said issues could be more acute in emerging markets. The benchmark rates of most advanced economies soared in recent years, as central banks aimed to tame inflation following the Covid-19 pandemic. A high U.S. interest rate environment is traditionally bad news for emerging markets, as it makes their debts — often priced in U.S. dollars — more expensive. "It is a much more serious issue for countries where the impact of high interest rates in the United States are more profound — in many emerging market economies," Georgieva told CNBC's Silvia Amaro in Brussels on Monday.

Washington CNN —US home-price growth accelerated in February at the fastest annual pace since November 2022, a sign that America’s housing market remains tough amid elevated mortgage rates. Of the 20 cities, San Diego saw the biggest increase in home prices in February, a steep 11.4% rise, followed by Chicago and Detroit. America’s housing market began to recover in the beginning the year as home sales surged from decades-lows in the fall and homebuilders began to feel to more upbeat about the economy. Mortgage rates have followed suit, since they track the 10-year yield. Economists don’t expect mortgage rates to drop meaningfully this year, and they could continue to climb if inflation remains stuck.

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., April 29, 2024. The volatility in the bond market has had equity investors on their toes for months, but at what point will rising yields spoil stocks' 2024 rally? The answer is 5% on the 10-year Treasury yield , according to Goldman Sachs . In a new 19-page paper using market data since the 1980s, the Wall Street firm said when that threshold is reached, the correlation between bond yields and stocks turns negative. The benchmark 10-year yield jumped 5 basis points Tuesday to 4.67% after data showed employee compensation costs increased more than expected to start the year.

Stubborn inflation has driven many households near the breaking point, but the pain of high prices has not been shared equally. By most measures, low-income households have been hardest hit, experts say. The Federal Reserve responded with a series of interest rate hikes that took its benchmark rate to its highest level in more than 22 years. The spike in interest rates caused most consumer borrowing costs to skyrocket, putting many households under pressure. Inflation continues to prove stickier than expected, dashing hopes that the Fed will be able to cut interest rates anytime soon.
